This was the 40th time a World Series reached its deciding Game 7. The starting pitchers were Washington’s Max Scherzer, who won Game 1, and Houston’s Zack Greinke, who received a no decision in Game 3, making this the first World Series Game 7 started by two previous Cy Young Award winners. Ceremonial first pitches were thrown by former Astros Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio.
• The Cardinals have played in the most winner-take-all Game 7s, going 11-5, including their most recent World Series championship in 2011. The Yankees (14, with a 6-8 record) are next on the list, but lost their most recent to the Astros in the 2017 ALCS. The Yankees avoided becoming the first team to get swept in the World Series since the 2012 Tigers and the first Yanks team to do so since 1976. They have forced a Game 5 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium — a game that has proven a pickle for some past clubs that lost the first three games of a postseason series but, in this case, is a big, big deal for a team able to trot out a pitcher of Cole’s ilk.
They used a bullpen game to blow out the Padres with their season on the line while on the road in Game 4 of the NLDS then came back to Dodger Stadium and shut them out to advance into the next round. They used an overwhelming offensive attack to dispatch the surging New York Mets, accumulating an NLCS-record 46 runs. And then they overwhelmed the high-powered Yankees.
With the bases loaded, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole responded with his best stuff of the evening to strike out Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani. It seemed Cole had completed a mesmerizing escape when Mookie Betts then hit a weak chopper to Anthony Rizzo at first base. Betts, though, hustled down the line. The ball took Rizzo just far enough from the bag that he could not complete the play himself. As Betts sprinted and touched the base with his left foot, Cole was frozen on the infield, failing to cover first in an inexplicable blunder. The Dodgers scored a run and still had the bases loaded. The rest is history: a Freddie Freeman single that scored two, then a Teoscar Hernández double that brought home two more and tied the game.
Freddie Freeman has been named World Series MVP. He homered in the first four games of the series, setting a record by homering in six consecutive World Series games dating to 2021. He matched another record by driving in 12 runs, tying 1960 Bobby Richardson for most RBI in a World Series. (Richardson got seven games, and his team lost. Freeman got five.)
So while they didn’t finish the job Tuesday night and have their hands full with Cole, there’s no denying the Dodgers are still in the driver’s seat as they try to win the World Series for the second time in five seasons and the first time in a full season since 1988.

With the Dodgers down to their final out, the Yankees intentionally walked Betts, thus loading the bases and bringing Freddie Freeman to the plate. On the first pitch, Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam over the right field wall, winning Game 1 for Los Angeles. This is the third consecutive World Series Game 1 to be decided in extra innings, after it previously occurred in 2022 and 2023.
With the win, the Dodgers won their eighth World Series championship in franchise history, tying their longtime rivals the San Francisco Giants for the second-most among National League clubs and the fifth-most overall. The Dodgers also joined their 2020 team, the 2018 Red Sox, the 2016 Cubs, the 2013 Red Sox, the 2009 Yankees, the 2007 Red Sox, and the 1998 Yankees as teams to win a World Series after having the best regular-season record in MLB in the wild card era. The Dodgers also set the record for most runs to come from behind from in a clinching game. The World Series MVP Award went to Freeman, the first player to homer in the first four games of a World Series and whose 12 RBIs tied the World Series record set in 1960 by Bobby Richardson. Freeman became the 12th player to win regular season MVP and World Series MVP in a career.
